Composition Assignment

For this assignment we took a hands-on approach to learning about how to compose a good photograph. We learned about the eleven elements of composition including color, balance, perspective, and many others by first reading about each component online and then going out into the world to try and capture photos that illustrated each of the distinct elements of composition. We were able to take pictures in and around the school as well as at home in order to make sure that we really understood what makes a good photograph. This assignment also served to familiarize us with our cameras and the online photo editing technology available to us so that we could get a good foundation of photography knowledge to build on for the rest of this class.

Lines: "stairs and railing"
Rule of Thirds: "flip flop feet"
Symmetery: "bikes on the wall"
Texture: "gravel"
Depth of Field: "yellow bunny"
Color: "hammock"
Space: "sign against sky"
Framing: "grace's face in circle"
Balance: "bike and railing"
Perspective: "sign post"
Pattern: "brick wall"

During this assignment I learned many things. I, of course, learned about the eleven components of a good photograph including balance, color, and the rule of thirds. I also realized that not every shot works out and that even if it seems like an awesome photo in your head, it doesn't always translate into a good picture. I also found out that somethimes it takes more than one try to capture something right because the first time it might be blurry or not the best angle.
